Whether you are a seasoned performer or just starting out, the right accessories can elevate your act to make it more enjoyable for both the audience and yourself! In this post, we will explore my personal top items as a drag queen that I couldn't live without.

The Importance of Knowing Yourself in Drag
Accessories in drag serve a purpose as essential tools that enhance your character and performance. They can help convey your persona, add flair to your outfit, and even save your actual life. Here are some functional reasons to have some staple accessories:
Character Development: Staple pieces can help define your drag persona. Whether you’re channeling a glamorous diva or a quirky character, the right pieces can tell your story and become a part of your own iconography.
Visual Impact: A carefully thought-out look can make your performance more memorable and comfortable.
Confidence Boost: Wearing the things that you love can also strengthen your confidence, leading to a stronger performance overall.
My Must-Have Accessories
Gloves
Because who likes popping off nails? Don't get me wrong, I'll put on a cute set of press-ons, but as a full-time student and someone with a day job, I simply can't keep up long nails in my day-to-day life! This is when gloves really changed the game.
Style: Consider the style that best fits your look! Is this an evening look? In which case, a long velvet opera glove might be the cherry on top. Maybe a leather partial glove will suit a more alternative look.
Wig Tape, Alcohol Pads, & Scissors
Come to think of it, I've never actually used the wig tape on my head. I always keep a supply of wig tape as well as scissors in my bag though. So where would the wig tape go, if not under my wig?
I use it to secure down parts of my costume. It's a great skin-safe adhesive that is also literally made to stick to fabric as well. Before a show, I will wipe the area down with an alcohol wipe to remove any oils. Then I cut the tape while the alcohol dries, and I stick it on wherever it needs to go. (This is the same method I use to attach pasties for my burlesque performances). You will also then have scissors available for other possible uses.
Heels, Backup Heels, and Slides
As a dancing queen, there's always a chance that something goes wrong with my shoes during a performance. Whether the heel cap pops off, a strap breaks, or I just don't want to wear that pair anymore, there's always a reason to bring a backup pair of heels along with you to your gig. Along with those two pairs, I also bring along a pair of comfortable shoes that I can slip into after the event's over for when I'm loading my things into the car and/or driving it.
Petticoats
If you're one for a full skirt, a petticoat will save your life. Whether it's a mermaid gown, sundress, or a ballgown, a petticoat will add that extra floof and shape to your silhouette. If you're unfamiliar, a petticoat is a type of skirt that serves as an undergarment to add volume to your outfit. They have been used for centuries and most commonly come in two forms:
Hoop skirt: Also called crinolines or farthingales, are petticoats that have been reinforced with wire or similar boning. These, as we know them, came into fashion during the mid-19th century, but similar styles can be referenced centuries back. Hoop skirts are great for creating a stable structure and solid shape. I most often use hoop skirts for more dramatic bell-shaped skirts for my 50's and lolita style gowns.
Chiffon petticoats: These are much more flexible and perfect for floaty movement. Often serving as a more lightweight option, I prefer to wear these during performances. This style also eliminates the chance that I catch my heel in the rungs of the petticoat.
At the end of the day...
The right accessories can truly enhance your performance. As you prepare for your next show, consider what you find uncomfortable and take note of it. Then you can take time to figure out how you can solve it. Whether you’re looking to make a statement or simply want to feel fabulous, the right pieces can help you shine. Embrace your creativity, and let yourself enjoy the show as well!
